In the last expansion, consumers built up a lot of debt. Once again, households are borrowing—for things like houses, cars, degrees. Total household debt surpassed the prior cycle's peak in 2017 and continues to make headlines as it hits record highs. That begs the question: Will the indebtedness of American households in relation to their income be a significant driver of the next downturn?
